My Story
Arthur Anthony Clinton Jr. — A Lifetime Dedicated to Latin Music
Arthur Anthony Clinton Jr. was born on February 21, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York, to Hispanic parents Carmen and Arthur Clinton Sr. Music was deeply rooted in his family, and that passion was passed on to Art Jr. from an early age.
His musical journey began in the third grade when he started playing the double bass through the New York public school music program. He continued his studies through intermediate school, where he quickly developed his skills and passion for performance.
Growing up, Art was inspired by legendary artists such as Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Tito Puente, and Tito Rodríguez. At the age of twelve, his family relocated to Puerto Rico, a move that would become a defining moment in his life as a musician.
Like many artists, Art’s career began with humble beginnings. At eighteen years old, he joined one of Puerto Rico’s hottest young band, Orquesta Opus 75. Those early years became some of the most meaningful experiences of his career, creating lifelong memories and friendships with fellow musicians who would go on to become respected names in the industry.
During this era, many members of Opus 75 were recruited by major orchestras, including Willie Rosario, Impacto Crea, La Mulenze , Luis Enrique and El Nuevo Montuno. Although Art received opportunities to join other established groups, his passion for leadership and creating his own musical vision led him to form his own orchestra.
In the 1980s, Art created Orquesta Opus, a group that achieved recognition throughout Puerto Rico and produced several successful recordings. After years of growth and accomplishments, Art passed leadership of the orchestra to one of its members, who continued the band’s success with additional recordings and performances.
Art later moved his family back to New York, where he temporarily stepped away from music to focus on raising his family. However, music remained a lifelong passion, and in 2000 he returned to the stage with his new project, Orquesta Opus Tres.
During this chapter, Art reunited with longtime friend Carlos Pabón, brother of renowned vocalist David Pabón. Together, they performed alongside David Pabón on multiple occasions and shared unforgettable musical experiences. Art is also proud that Orquesta Opus Tres had the honor of performing at the inauguration of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
After several years, Art and Carlos chose to pursue separate musical paths, opening the door to new creative opportunities. Along the way, Art had the privilege of sharing the stage with many acclaimed performers, including Tito Allen, Ray de la Paz, Pichie Pérez, Van Lester, Héctor Tricoche, Viti Ruiz, and the legendary musician Luis “Perico” Ortiz.
The next chapter began with Komboloko, a new musical adventure that brought fresh energy and creativity. The band produced a major recording and released the hit song “Dime Lo Que Quieres,” performed by renowned vocalist Ray de la Paz.
Never one to remain stagnant, Art continued evolving as an artist. His next project, Hizpanika, represents a new direction combining Latin jazz with high-energy salsa. This 13-member orchestra reflects Art’s lifelong dedication to innovation, musicianship, and the traditions that shaped him.
Returning to his musical roots in Puerto Rico, Art recorded the new single “La Hizpanika,” which is currently receiving its final touches and represents another exciting milestone in his journey.
With more than 50 years dedicated to music, Art Clinton Jr. remains grateful for every musician, collaborator, and supporter who has shared the journey. He takes pride not only in the accomplishments and performances of the past, but also in the future possibilities ahead.
Rather than looking back solely at achievements, Art continues to focus on creating meaningful music, inspiring others, and touching lives through his art.
